Drive2Survive would like to express our heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to Billy Welch and Bill Lloyd for their continued voluntary support, solidarity, and unwavering commitment to our work and to the wider Gypsy and Traveller community.
Billy Welch has long been a champion of our rights and culture. From standing with us at the 2021 protest in Parliament Square against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act, to amplifying our voices at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, his presence has been more than symbolic—it has been vital. He has given his time, energy, and platform to help raise awareness, fight injustice, and protect our nomadic way of life.
Billy’s support for Drive2Survive has also been hands-on. He has welcomed our initiatives at Appleby Fair—from our children’s education tents and mobile blacksmith forge to the Appleby’s Got Talent stage, helping us to reach the community with messages about trespass laws and more. He has offered full access to the site, free of charge and without restriction—demonstrating trust and shared purpose.
More recently, Billy has been a key ally in our statue project—a powerful Drive2Survive initiative representing pride, identity, and resilience. As we faced resistance and racism in our effort to secure a permanent home for the statue, Billy stood alongside us. His work with local planning authorities and his support in securing an alternative location speaks to his dedication and belief in what we do.
We also extend our thanks to Bill Lloyd, who has supported our cultural and campaigning work and worked hard behind the scenes to help secure a fair hearing for our community.
In times when our communities face exclusion and hostility, the voluntary efforts of people like Billy and Bill are not just appreciated—they are essential. Their actions speak of loyalty, shared struggle, and genuine allyship. They are the model of how unity brings results.
From all of us at Drive2Survive: thank you.
