Contact your MP today

On July 5th, MPs will vote on whether to pass the racist Police Bill. Please contact them to ask them to vote against it and invite them to our open-air lobby on July 7th in Parliament Square. Here’s how:

Send Letter by Post:

Step 1.

Do you know who your local MP is? To find out who they are and how to contact them, put your postcode on this website: https://www.theyworkforyou.com/

Step 2.

Select and copy their postal address.

Step 3.

Select and copy the template letter below. Then, paste it into a word processor such as Microsoft Word. Remember, MPs can only help those who currently live in their constituency, so add your address and postcode at the top.

Step 6.

We strongly encourage you to personalise the template. Write your MP’s name in the ‘Dear…’ section. Add your name after ‘Yours sincerely.’ Add your address. Tell your MP how you feel the Policing Bill will directly impact you, your family, and your community.

Step 7.

Print and sign the letter by hand.

Step 8.

Post to your MP or take into one of their surgery hours (adhering to Covid-19 safety rules). Please note: your MP may write you back.

Dear [MP NAME],

I’m writing as a member of your constituency. The upcoming Police Bill is extremely important to me, and as my elected representative, I need your support to lobby against it.

The Policing Bill will criminalise, demonise and ultimately eradicate nomadic life in Britain. These additional powers will see Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people imprisoned, their homes seized and fines imposed of up to £2500.

I am part of a nationwide coalition of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people. I hope you will help make my voice heard in Parliament through your votes, ministerial appointments, and debate. To help preserve the centuries-old cultural traditions that belong to our legally recognised ethnic groups, you can:

  • join our Drive to Survive peaceful protest at Parliament Square on [July 7th TBC],

  • raise the issue at your Party Conference in the autumn of 2021, ask at PMQs: Why, when there is a severe shortage of safe, legal stopping places does the UK Government prefer to make the nomadic life of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people illegal? Why are we not investing in safe, legal stopping places when the Police themselves advise we need more sites, not stricter rules?

  • Anything else you would like to add.

I look forward to hearing how you intend to address this personally within a reasonable time frame and the Code of Conduct. If you cannot address this personally, please escalate my letter to the relevant Minister or department directly.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Yours sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]
